Death of Brother Agnellus van der Weide, O.F.M.
R.I.P.

Brother Agnellus van der Weide, a member of the community of Studium Biblicum, who in October returned to Holland, went to the home of the heavenly Father on Friday, 2 December 1983, aged 76.

Brother Agnellus was born on 4 August 1907, in the north of Holland. By temperament and character he was a true Frieslander, upright, realistic and energetic. He joined the Franciscan Order in 1930 and came to China in 1933. He worked in the diocese of Luanfu, Shansi, until the Japanese in 1942 sent him with a large group of foreign missionaries to a concentration camp. After the war he spent a few years in Hankow and a short time in Macao and finally came to Hong Kong, where he fitted out the house of the Studium Biblicum at 70 Kennedy Road.

Because of his many practical gifts, his carefulness, his good judgement and his talents as an organizer he was again and again entrusted with the planning and inspection of various new buildings of the Order in Kowloon, Singapore and Taiwan. His last building was the extension of the Studium Biblicum in Henderson Road.

In the Studium he found his niche as librarian. He personally worked out the plans for the large library. His knowledge of languages helped him to arrange some 20,000 books according to modern library methods. The library was his creation and he felt justly proud of it.

His interests, however, were not restricted to this work. In a true spirit of charity he was concerned about the many Hong Kong people in need. Charitable institutions, Hospitals, Refugee camps and Homes for the Aged received alms which he had begged from his friends in Holland.

Brother Agnellus had long desired to remain in Hong Kong and to die here. But in the middle of October when his suffering had grown he decided to return to his homeland, where he died in great peace, “grateful for the beautiful life and work the Lord had given him.”

方濟會韓守善修士
在其故鄉安息主懷

韓 修 士 一 九 ０ 七 年 生 於 荷 蘭 ， 一 九 三 ０ 年 入 方 濟 會 ， 一 九 三 三 年 到 山 西 潞 安 教 區 輔 助 傳 教 事 務 。 中 日 戰 爭 末 ， 曾 被 拘 禁 在 北 平 集 中 營 數 年 ， 獲 釋 後 去 漢 口 、 澳 門 服 務 。 一 九 五 ０ 年 到 香 港 思 高 聖 經 學 會 管 理 事 務 和 圖 書 館 ， 並 兼 理 會 中 各 處 的 建 築 工 事 。 對 教 會 和 院 內 之 事 常 樂 意 盡 力 服 務 ， 且 關 愛 病 老 窮 苦 的 人 和 越 南 難 民 ， 付 出 很 多 。 韓 修 士 來 中 國 服 務 至 本 年 十 一 月 已 整 五 十 年 ， 他 本 願 死 於 茲 葬 於 茲 ， 但 近 數 月 來 肺 癌 加 厲 ， 不 想 給 同 會 加 重 負 擔 ， 故 決 意 回 國 。 到 荷 蘭 五 十 天 ， 即 息 勞 歸 主 。 求 主 賜 之 永 安 。

韓守善修士功德無量
生前造福老弱病黎不遺餘力

方 濟 會 韓 守 善 修 士 最 近 在 其 故 鄉 荷 蘭 病 逝 ， 使 本 港 受 其 惠 者 特 別 感 到 痛 惜 ， 因 修 士 在 港 期 間 ， 盡 力 造 福 老 弱 病 黎 ， 不 論 大 小 均 悉 力 以 赴 。 據 香 港 明 愛 安 老 服 務 部 負 責 人 稱 ： 韓 修 士 於 一 九 八 ０ 年 將 其 親 友 祝 賀 其 入 會 金 慶 的 賀 儀 全 部 慨 捐 給 該 部 門 。 近 三 四 年 間 ， 韓 修 士 又 捐 助 兩 輛 小 巴 ， 成 立 老 人 福 利 基 金 ， 修 繕 明 苑 及 清 輝 閣 兩 宿 舍 ， 負 擔 八 百 多 名 老 人 健 康 檢 查 及 製 作 健 康 教 育 幻 燈 片 費 用 ； 付 出 一 萬 冊 健 康 小 冊 子 「福 壽 康 寧」 的 印 製 費 ； 去 年 及 本 年 負 擔 明 愛 舉 辦 週 年 耆 英 歡 樂 營 的 費 用 及 老 人 工 藝 活 動 發 展 費 等 ， 共 約 廿 五 萬 港 幣 。 如 今 明 愛 安 老 服 務 痛 失 良 朋 ， 特 於 上 週 末 上 午 假 公 教 進 行 社 小 堂 為 韓 修 士 舉 行 追 思 彌 撒 ， 由 明 愛 醫 院 駐 院 司 鐸 陳 有 海 神 父 主 祭 並 講 道 ， 讚 揚 韓 修 士 真 正 愛 主 愛 人 的 功 德 。
