Death of Father Pilenga
Half a century of missionary work
The Rev. Father Balthassar
Pilenga, who had served in the Hong Kong diocese for more than 50 years, died at
Canossa Hospital yesterday. He was 78.
A Requiem Mass will be offered
today at St. Margaret’s Church at 10am, to be followed by burial at the Roman
Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley.
Born on 1 January 1890, Father Pilenga was ordained in 1914 and assigned to the Hong Kong mission the following
year. He served in the Wai Yeung area and was for several years its Dean. After
the war, he served at various posts in Hong Kong and Kowloon, including that of
Parish Priest of Sham Shui Po parish from 1946 to 1955.
In 1964, Father Pilenga
celebrated his Golden Jubilee and went back to Italy - for the first time for 50
years - for a short holiday. Upon his return to Hong Kong he was assigned to the
Cathedral Parish.
Father Pilenga was well known
for his affable personality and his untiring devotion to missionary work. Half a
century’s service has endeared him to large circles of friends.

The Reverend Balthassar Pilenga,
who served in the Hong Kong diocese for more than 50 years, died at the Canossa
Hospital yesterday. He was 78.
Born on 1 January 1890, Father Pilenga was ordained in 1914 and assigned to the Hong Kong mission the following
year.
He served in the Wai Yeung area
of Kwang Tung Province and was for a number of years its Dean. After the war he
served at various posts in Hong Kong and Kowloon, including that of Parish
Priest of Sham Shui Po from 1946 to 1955.
Devoted

Cathedral Parish upon his return.

Father Balthasar Pilenga, PIME, who had
served in the Diocese of Hong Kong for over 50 years, died at Canossa Hospital on 26
January 1968, after a short illness, aged 78.
Requiem Mass fort he repose of his soul was celebrated at St. Margaret’s Church on 27
January, and was followed by the funeral to the Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley.
Father Pilenga was born on 1 January 1890. He was ordained priest in 1914 and was assigned
to the Hong Kong mission in the following year. He served in the Deanery of Wai Yeung,
Kwangtung, in the years before World War II, and was himself Dean for several years. After
the war he served in various parishes in Hong Kong and Kowloon and was Parish Priest of
Shamshuipo for 1946 to 1955.
In 1964 he celebrated his sacerdotal Golden Jubilee.
After his jubilee he went to Italy - for the first time in 50 years - for a short holiday.
On his return to Hong Kong he was assigned to the Cathedral Parish.
Father Pilenga was widely known for his affability, his originality, and his untiring
devotion to missionary work. Half a century of service had endured him to a large circle
of friends and age had not withered his unstudied charm. He will be much missed.

來 華 傳 教 逾 五 十 年 的 宗 座
外 方 傳 教 會 會 士 畢 靈 雅 神 父 ， 於 一 九 六 八 年 一 月 廿
六 日 晨 八 時 二 十 分 病 逝 半 山 嘉 諾 撒 醫 院 ， 享 年 七 十
八 歲 。 一 月 廿 七 日 上 午 十 時 教 區 當 局 舉 行 追 思 彌 撒
， 遺 體 安 葬 於 跑 馬 地 天 主 教 墳 場 。
畢 神 父 誕 生 於 一 八 九 ０ 年 ， 原 籍 義 北 柏
嘉 謨 ， 一 九 一 四 年 晉 鐸 ， 翌 年 來 港 ， 奉 派 惠 陽 區 工
作 ， 駐 該 區 二 十 餘 年 ， 一 九 三 六 年 出 任 該 區 總 鐸 。
戰 後 服 務 於 港 九 堂 區 ， 曾 主 持 深 水 埗 寶 血 堂 區 (現
改 為 聖 方 濟 各 堂 區) 六 年 。
一 九 六 四 年 畢 神 父 喜 逢 晉 鐸 金 慶 ， 教 區 內
曾 舉 行 盛 大 慶 祝 ， 同 年 夏 季 作 來 華 後 首 次 返 義 渡 假
。 一 九 六 五 年 返 港 供 職 於 總 堂 區 。
畢 神 父 為 人 和 藹 可 親 ， 傳 教 熱 心 ， 為 本 教
區 宣 勞 五 十 餘 年 ， 貢 獻 至 大 。 金 慶 後 年 事 雖 高 ， 仍
欲 在 堂 區 內 盡 一 份 力 ， 逝 世 前 一 週 突 感 不 適 ， 赴 醫
院 就 診 ， 但 因 心 臟 病 及 多 種 宿 疾 併 發 而 告 不 治 。

門 庭 依 舊 ， 巍 峨 莊 嚴 的 聖 堂 ； 陣 陣 的 寒 風 捲 著 樹 上 的 落 葉 ， 我 冒 著 迎 面
的 冷 雨 ， 步 伐 茫 然 的 四 處 尋 覓 ， 我 尋 的 是 什 麼 ？ 找 的 是 什 麼 ？ 在 聖 堂 神 聖 的 祭 台 裡 ， 不 再 有
他 那 神 聖 的 獻 祭 ， 但 他 那 慈 祥 的 面 孔 ， 小 小 斑 白 的 鬍 子 ， 破 舊 而 清 潔 的 長 袍 ， 輕 輕 纏 著 頸 兒 的
絲 巾 ， 偶 然 攜 帶 的 手 籃 子 ， 還 有 臉 上 的 笑 容 ， 都 使 我 忘 不 了 。 無 奈 一 坯 黃 土 ， 已 把 這 一 切 一 切
埋 沒 去 ！
他 是 我 的 神 師 ── 畢 靈 雅 神 父 ， 是 一 個 慈 祥 而 樂 於 助 人
的 好 神 父 。 他 原 是 富 家 子 弟 ， 家 中 開 設 有 龐 大 的 工 廠 ， 但 不 戀 世 俗 繁 華 的 他 ， 自 願 追 隨 上 主
， 為 主 作 證 ， 甘 願 淡 薄 而 輕 名 利 ， 樂 受 神 貧 ， 永 遠 穿 上 一 件 破 舊 的 衣 裳 。 他 愛 好 小 鳥 兒 ， 飼 養
了 許 多 小 白 燕 和 烏 鴉， 自 來 到 聖 方 濟 各 堂 後 ， 他 極 力 安 慰 我 這 徬 徨 無 主 的 迷 途 羔 羊 ； 他 幫 助 我
， 為 我 投 考 「護 士」 的 工 作 而 奔 跑 ， 使 我 畢 生 難 忘 ！ 後 來 他 乘 船 回 義 大 利 ， 我 含 淚 送 行 ， 祈
求 天 主 降 福 他 ！
因 他 愛 好 香 港 ， 於 是 ， 一 九 六 五 年 的 聖 誕 ， 他 再 回 到 香 港 繼 續 傳 教 工 作 ， 我 與 弟 弟 時 往 大 堂
探 訪 他 ， 與 他 談 笑 ， 至 夕 陽 西 墜 才 回 家 。 他 愛 我 姊 弟 至 深 ， 我 也 愛 他 的 鳥 兒 ， 時 常 買 食 物 給
牠 們 吃 ！
去 年 聖 誕 ， 我 與 媽 媽 、 弟 弟 同 往 探 訪 他 ， 久 別 重 逢 ， 他 非 常 高 興 。 我 求 他 為 我 們 的 學 業 向 上
主 祈 求 ， 他 說 在 每 天 彌 撒 中 他 都 為 我 們 祈 禱 。 我 喜 出 望 外 之 餘 ， 還 答 應 於 農 曆 新 年 找 他 拜 年
。
豈 料 此 別 竟 成 永 訣 ！ 別 時 他 的 健 康 尚 佳 ， 可 是 二 十 多 天 後 ， 郤 因 心 臟 病 發 而 逝 世 ， 投 回 天 主 的
懷 抱 裏 。 我 驚 聞 噩 耗 ， 有 若 晴 天 霹 靂 ， 不 禁 茫 然 若 失 。 我 不 相 信 ， 但 走 往 堅 道 大 堂 一 問 ， 這
已 成 鐵 一 般 的 事 實 。 淚 已 涸 乾 了 ， 心 也 實 木 了 ， 我 能 說 什 麼 呢 ？ 無 言 的 死 別 ， 真 使 我 終 生 遺
憾 。
輕 撫 著 畢 神 父 送 給 我 的 十 字 架 和 唸 珠 ， 倍 添 惆 悵 。 此 十 字 架 是 臨 終 十 字 架 ， 如 有 什 麼 急 難 時
， 手 執 這 十 字 架 祈 求 天 主 ， 可 免 於 危 難 。 去 年 ， 我 的 一 位 表 兄 ， 得 一 場 重 病 ， 遍 覓 名 醫 ， 亦
無 起 色 。 母 親 攜 此 十 字 架 與 表 兄 ， 教 他 堅 信 ， 向 上 主 祈 求 。 終 於 他 得 慶 生 還 ， 感 謝 天 主 ， 也
感 謝 畢 神 父 。
畢 神 父 已 去 了 ， 我 所 欠 他 的 恩 惠 實 在 太 多 ， 今 生 再 無 機 會 報 答 。 唯 求 天 主 ， 賜 他 早 日 升 天 堂
， 為 他 的 靈 魂 祈 禱 並 祈 求 天 主 賜 他 息 止 安 所 ！
