The funeral of Father Dominic A. Frare,
PIME, Parish Priest of Rosary Church, Kowloon, took place last Monday at St. Michael’s
Cemetery, Happy Valley.
Father Frare died suddenly in his sleep on the previous Saturday. Solemn Pontifical
Requiem Mass was celebrated by His Lordship Bishop Lawrence Bianchi, at St. Margaret’s
Church, Happy Valley, on Monday morning. His Lordship was assisted at the mass by the Rt.
Rev. Msgr. Felix J. Shek, Vicar-General. Father L. Mencarini and Father N. Santinon the
classmates of the deceased assisted as Deacon and Subdeacon and other fellow students of
the late priest served the Mass.
Hundreds of priests, Sisters and Brothers and great numbers of parishioners and friends of
Father Frare from all over the Colony crowded St. Margaret’s Church and took part in the miletong funeral procession. Groups of people came from Sai Kung and Tai Long in the New
Territories, where Father Frare spent his first years, after arriving in the Colony.
The pall bearers at the funeral were the young men of the Catholic Young Men's Association
and the Legion of Mary of Rosary Church.
The sudden demise of Father Frare came as a deep shock to His Lordship, the clergy, his
parishioners and the many friends who, until his last day saw him in perfect health and
all given to his parochial duties.
To the Bihsop, the Diocesan clergy and the Pontifical Institute of the Foreign Missions
the passing of Father Frare caused deepest sorrow and has left a void which will not
easily be filled.
Father Frare was only 43 years old: Born in Italy, in Vittorio Veneto in the Province of
Treviso he studied for the priesthood in the seminary of his Diocese which he entered at
the age of seventeen. Before completing his studies he believed that his vocation was
missionary work and after three years of studies in the Diocesan seminary, in 1931, he
joined the Pontifical Institute of the Foreign Missions of Milan where he completed his
course and was ordained a priest in 1939. World War II prevented his coming out to the
Missions and he took up duties as professor of Latin, Greek and Italian languages in the
schools of the Pontifical Institute in Milan.
He was well-known as a great scholar in Greek and Latin.
During the war whilst in the seminary he escaped death by a near miracle when the bed
which he had just vacated received a direct bomb hit.
At the end of the war his desire to work in the mission fields was granted and he arrived
in Hong Kong on 14 October 1947.
During the first year after his arrival he concentrated on the study of the Hakka dialect
in the Sai Kung District. Later he was placed in charge of the ecclesiastical district of
Tai Long in the New Territories.
In 1951 Bishop Bianchi recalled him to Hong Kong and appointed him Vicar Co-operator at
the Rosary Church Parish, Kowloon.
Warm-hearted and understanding, Father Frare took over his new position with zeal and soon
gained great numbers of friends among the parishioners of Rosary Church.
In April 1955 His Lordship Bishop Lawrence Bianchi appointed Father Frare as Parish Priest
of Rosary Church, a position which he filled until his untimely death with most
praiseworthy efficiency and great zeal.
The deceased was endowed with a natural gift of making friends and of adapting
himself to circumstances. His parishioners found him ready to help at any time
and the great numbers of bereft friends in Kowloon and in the New Territories
are a testimony to his priestly spirit and kindness. He was greatly liked among
his fellow priests and in his Society he was known to be equally happy to obey
as to direct. Whatever he did, he did with zeal and following the rules of his
Missionary congregation.
Father Frare is survived by his mother who is over 70 years of age and six brothers and
two sisters.

教內人士極表哀悼
九 龍 玫 瑰 堂 主 任 霍 藩 神 父 ， 於 一 九 五 六 年 四 月 十 三 日 晨 被 發 覺 僵 臥 床 中 。 噩 耗 傳 來 ， 該 堂 區 信 眾 以 及 神 父 之 友 好 均 極 表 驚 愕 與 哀 悼 ， 查 神 父 於 去 世 之 前 日 精 神 尚 佳 ， 其 辦 事 一 如 平 素 。 白 英 奇 主 教 暨 本 教 區 神 職 界 均 認 彼 之 死 ， 留 一 不 可 彌 補 之 缺 憾 ， 是 以 皆 惋 惜 萬 分 。
霍 神 父 現 年 僅 四 十 三 歲 ， 為 意 國 特 勒 味 所 省 人 士 。 初 在 當 地 教 區 修 院 肄 業 。 後 為 適 應 傳 教 使 命 ， 於 一 九 三 一 年 進 米 蘭 外 方 傳 教 會 ， 並 轉 入 該 會 修 院 攻 讀 ， 直 至 一 九 三 九 年 晉 升 鐸 品 。 當 時 因 第 二 次 世 界 大 戰 爆 發 ， 不 能 外 出 ， 便 在 該 會 所 設 之 學 校 內 擔 任 教 授 拉 丁 、 希 臘 等 文 字 之 職 務 。 一 九 四 七 年 十 月 十 四 日 奉 調 來 港 ， 在 新 界 西 貢 專 心 學 習 客 家 語 ， 以 便 在 該 處 傳 道 ， 旋 被 調 至 大 浪 堂 區 傳 教 。 一 九 五 一 年 奉 命 調 至 九 龍 玫 瑰 堂 ， 任 副 主 任 職 。 因 神 父 秉 性 溫 良 ， 待 人 厚 道 ， 熱 心 教 務 ， 辦 事 幹 練 ， 深 得 該 堂 區 信 眾 之 愛 戴 。 去 年 四 月 ， 白 主 教 委 神 父 為 該 堂 主 任 。 從 此 為 完 成 傳 教 救 靈 之 使 命 ， 無 不 竭 力 以 赴 ， 直 至 於 死 ， 從 未 稍 懈 。
神 父 之 遺 體 安 葬 於 跑 馬 地 天 主 教 墳 場 。 十 六 日 上 午
九 時 先 在 聖 瑪 加 利 大 堂 由 白 主 教 舉 行 安 所 大 禮 彌 撒
， 參 與 聖 祭 者 ， 有 各 堂 區 各 修 會 之 司 鐸 、 修 士 、 修 女 ，
以 及 聖 貞 德 、 聖 瑪 加 利 女 中 學 生 與 信 友 等 ， 不 下 千 餘
人 。 彌 撒 畢 即 出 殯 ， 由 全 體 參 與 彌 撒 之 人 送 柩 至 墳
場 ， 及 至 入 葬 後 始 盡 哀 而 歸 。 望 本 報 讀 者 為 霍 神 父
求 主 ， 俾 彼 早 登 天 國 。

特 於 本 月 二 十 日 晨 七 時 一 刻 ， 在 該 堂 奉 獻 安 所 大 禮 彌 撒 ， 由 科 神 父 及 馬 神 父 襄 禮 。 參 加 聖 祭
並 追 悼 禮 儀 者 有 寶 血 會 修 女 ， 德 貞 中 學 員 生 ， 聖 五 傷 方 濟 各 小 學 中 英 文 部 員 生 及 霍 神 父 生 前
友 好 ， 玫 瑰 堂 教 友 等 甚 眾 云 。

雄 偉 而 嚴 肅 的 聖 瑪 加 利 大 堂 ， 今 天 更 充 滿 了 沉 默 與 悲 哀 。 祭 台 前 ， 放 著 一 個 棺 柩 ， 被 黑 色 的 布 蓋 著 ， 上 面 放 著 一 件 白 色 的 祭 衣 ， 一 頂 黑 色 的 帽 子 。 棺 柩 的 裡 面 ， 就 是 霍 神 父 的 屍 體 。 這 是 為 霍 神 父 做 的 安 所 彌 撒 ， 主 禮 為 白 主 教 ， 五 六 品 副 祭 以 及 其 他 輔 祭 都 由 司 鐸 們 充 當 。 教 友 們 都 垂 著 頭 ， 手 持 念 珠 ， 默 默 的 為 已 死 的 霍 神 父 祈 禱 。
彌 撒 完 了 ， 我 們 步 出 聖 堂 ， 長 長 的 行 列 ， 直 向 天 主 教 墳 場 慢 步 前 行 。 在 墳 場 內 的 一 處 ， 早 已 掘 好 了 一 個 穴 。 主 教 、 司 鐸 、 修 女 、 學 生 、 教 友 等 ， 都 密 密 的 圍 著 這 個 穴 。 當 棺 柩 放 下 去 後 ， 每 個 人 內 心 的 悲 痛 ， 實 非 筆 墨 所 能 形 容 ， 淚 水 從 每 雙 憂 苦 的 眼 睛 中 自 然 地 流 下 來 ， 有 些 悲 傷 得 更 厲 害 的 ， 伏 在 別 的 碑 上 痛 哭 。 當 白 主 教 向 穴 中 拋 下 第 一 塊 泥 土 時 ， 各 人 的 心 更 感 難 過 ， 更 覺 悲 傷 。 一 坏 黃 土 ， 便 把 霍 神 父 的 肉 身 ， 深 深 地 埋 藏 在 地 下 了 ！ 當 時 我 內 心 的 痛 苦 ， 真 像 刀 割 一 般 ， 望 著 眼 前 的 那 堆 黃 泥 在 發 呆 ， 忽 然 ， 在 我 糢 糊 的 淚 眼 中 ， 髣 髴 看 到 霍 神 父 昔 日 的 容 貌 ， 不 大 高 的 個 子 ， 卻 是 胖 胖 的 ， 強 壯 得 很 ， 面 上 總 是 容 光 煥 發 ， 精 神 充 沛 。 走 起 路 來 ， 威 武 十 足 。 說 話 時 ， 聲 音 響 亮 雄 壯 。 這 一 切 都 表 現 出 他 是 個 身 體 非 常 健 康 的 人 ， 絕 不 像 是 個 四 十 多 歲 的 中 年 呢 ！ 今 天 突 然 的 死 去 ， 叫 人 怎 不 痛 心 ？ 真 如 聖 經 上 說 ： 「死 亡 的 來 臨 ， 一 如 夜 間 的 盜 賊 。」 是 的 ， 任 何 人 也 不 知 道 自 己 在 甚 麼 時 候 ， 在 甚 麼 地 方 或 是 怎 樣 的 死 。 那 是 天 主 的 恩 惠 ， 衪 把 死 亡 的 時 候 隱 暪 了 ， 不 讓 我 們 知 道 ， 好 叫 我 們 常 常 準 備 著 死 亡 的 來 臨 。
送 葬 的 人 開 始 離 去 了 。 我 揩 去 臉 上 的 淚 痕 ， 低 垂 下 頭 ，
默 默 的 向 霍 神 父 說 ： 「安 息 罷 ！ 我 敬 愛 的 霍 神 父 。」
