一 八 六 七 年 十 二 月 三 十 日 在 意 大 利 出 生 ， 一 八 九 二 年 晉 鐸 ， 為 意 大 米 蘭 外 方 傳 教 會 會 士 。 一 八 九 二 年 十 一 月 二 日 抵 港 ， 隨 即 入 西 貢 寶 安 等 地 傳 教 。 一 八 九 五 年 服 務 於 主 教 座 堂 ， 一 九 ０ 七 年 至 一 九 一 ０ 年 任 九 龍 玫 瑰 堂 主 任 司 鐸 ； 一 九 一 一 年 返 回 意 大 利 ， 直 至 一 九 一 四 年 返 港 ， 並 再 出 任 九 龍 玫 瑰 堂 主 任 司 鐸 。 一 九 二 四 年 二 月 二 十 日 師 主 教 逝 世 ， 德 神 父 被 委 為 署 理 主 教 直 至 恩 理 覺 主 教 上 任 ， 一 九 三 四 年 被 派 往 主 教 座 堂 出 任 主 任 司 鐸 一 職 ， 一 九 四 八 年 退 休 後 居 於 堅 道 主 教 府 ， 一 九 五 ０ 年 十 一 月 廿 四 日 於 香 港 逝 世 。

Death of Father Spada

The Rev. Father John Michael Spada died on Friday evening in the French Hospital, Causeway Bay, at the age of 83.

Ordained to the priesthood in June 1892, his Superiors in the Milan Foreign Mission Society directed him to the Mission at Hong Kong without delay. He arrived here on 2 November 1892.

He worked first in the outlying country districts of Sai Kung and Nam Tao. Later he joined the staff of the Cathedral on Caine Road, which parish at that time, comprised mostly of Portuguese Catholics. Father Spada at once mastered that language in order to be more one with his flock.

In 1905 he pioneered Catholic life in Kowloon. At that time “Tsim-sha-tsui” was a sandy beach, where people put up mat sheds for the bathing season. Father Spada started his mission in Kowloon in a hut where he went on Sundays to say Mass. It was not until 1907 that the first Presbytery on Chatham Road, was built and a resident priest was placed in charge of the Kowloon district.

From 1911 to 1914 Father Spada resided in Italy as the Mission Delegate to the Central Council of the Milan Foreign Mission Society. In 1914 he returned to Hong Kong and took up his work at Rosary Church.

In 1933 he was appointed Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Caine Road, in which office he remained until 1942.

Latterly he has lived at the Mission House in Caine Road, where he continued to keep in touch with the faithful. During his active service for the Mission, he co-operated in many important works like the formation and building of the New Chinese Convent at Shumshuipo, and the Maryknoll Convent at Kowloon Tong.

His long career of almost sixty years in China is a record of piety and zeal. He will long be remembered among the Catholics of Hong Kong, and his name blessed by the many who enjoyed his spiritual ministrations and material help from his paternal hand.

The funeral will leave the Chapel of Christ the King. French Convent, Causeway Bay, at 2:15pm today and will pass the Monument, Happy Valley, at 3pm for burial in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley.

The Mission of Hong Kong suffered a great loss in the death of Father John Michael Spada on Friday evening 24 November 1950 last in the French Hospital, Causeway Bay, at the age of 83. He was ordained in 1892 and soon after he entered the Lombard Seminary for Foreign Missions in Milan (Italy).

His Superiors directed him to the Mission at Hong Kong with out delay, He arrived here on 2 November 1892.

In 1921, at the death of Monsignor Pozzoni, Father Spada was appointed pro-Vicar of the Hong Kong Vicariate at which post he remained until the consecration of His Lordship Bishop Valtorta in 1926. For the following six year he was Vicar General of the Diocese.

In 1933 he was appointed Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Caine Road, Where he remained until 1942.

Latterly he has lived at the Mission House on Caine Road, where he continued to keep in touch with the faithful. During his active service for the mission, he co-operated in many important works like the formation and building of the New Chinese Convent at Sham Shui Po, and the Maryknoll Convent at Kowloon Tong. St. Teresa’s Church and La Salle College. “A real gentleman,” he was defined by those who knew him. Very kind, dignified, trustworthy, always ready to help anybody, he had an extraordinary memory for faces and facts which kept for him many friends.

As a Missionary he was very zealous during his period of priestly activity, but he continued to promote the propagation of the Faith through the labours of others, when he could no longer work himself. He contributed to a School for Catechists to form a group of lay helpers to the Missionaries, and to the building of the Holy Ghost Seminary, Sai Kung.

His long career of almost sixty years in China is a record of piety and zeal. He will long be remembered among the Catholics of Hong Kong, and his name blessed by the many who enjoyed his spiritual ministrations and material help from his paternal hand.

His funeral was attended by a large number of clergy, religious and faithful of the Diocese. His Lordship, The Most Reverend H. Valtorta, assisted by Bishop Joseph Yuen and Monsignor Paul Curran, officiated at the grave-side.

德 若 翰 神 父 於 一 九 五 ０ 年 十 一 月 廿 四 日 晚 ， 在 香 港 銅 鑼 灣 聖 保 祿 醫 院 逝 世 了 。 他 的 死 ， 是 香 港 教 區 的 一 個 大 損 失 。 他 生 於 一 八 六 七 年 十 二 月 ， 享 年 八 十 三 歲 ， 可 算 是 神 父 們 中 的 一 個 長 壽 者 。 德 公 於 一 八 九 二 年 晉 陞 鐸 品 後 ， 入 了 意 國 米 蘭 外 方 傳 教 會 ， 同 年 十 一 月 二 日 ， 便 被 遣 到 香 港 。 開 始 他 傳 教 的 工 作 在 西 貢 及 南 頭 等 地 。 經 過 了 三 年 艱 苦 的 生 活 ， 才 被 派 到 香 港 堅 道 大 堂 。 當 時 香 港 大 堂 的 教 友 ， 大 部 份 為 葡 人 ， 於 是 他 學 習 葡 語 ， 而 與 葡 籍 教 友 ， 感 情 打 成 一 片 。 一 九 ０ 五 年 ， 他 開 創 了 ， 九 龍 公 教 的 生 活 。 當 時 的 尖 沙 咀 不 過 是 人 們 在 夏 天 搭 起 帳 幕 作 海 浴 的 沙 灘 。 每 逢 主 日 ， 他 便 到 這 裡 的 一 所 簡 陋 的 草 寮 裡 舉 行 彌 撒 ， 至 一 九 ０ 七 年 ， 漆 咸 道 上 ， 才 設 備 了 一 所 神 父 寓 所 。 六 年 後 ， 他 被 選 為 米 蘭 傳 教 會 議 會 代 表 而 往 意 國 去 了 。 後 因 水 土 不 適 ， 於 一 九 一 四 年 回 到 香 港 ， 興 建 九 龍 玫 瑰 堂 。 一 九 二 四 年 二 月 ， 前 任 師 主 教 死 了 而 新 任 恩 主 教 尚 未 產 生 ， 德 公 便 兼 任 代 理 主 教 管 理 教 務 ， 直 至 一 九 二 六 年 六 月 。 一 九 三 三 年 七 月 一 日 他 離 開 玫 瑰 堂 以 事 休 養 。 次 年 任 香 港 總 堂 本 堂 神 父 ， 繼 續 工 作 。 一 九 四 二 年 ， 為 了 戰 事 影 響 ， 他 才 辭 了 這 本 堂 的 重 擔 ， 然 而 他 仍 與 各 界 教 友 保 持 聯 絡 。

深 水 埗 寶 血 會 女 修 院 及 九 龍 塘 瑪 利 諾 女 修 院 之 建 設 ， 實 在 賴 他 的 努 力 幫 忙 。 在 坪 山 ， 他 捐 助 了 一 所 學 校 為 培 養 那 些 幫 助 傳 教 的 傳 教 先 生 。 在 西 貢 ， 他 出 了 大 筆 款 項 捐 助 了 那 所 栽 培 司 鐸 的 聖 神 修 院 。 徹 底 認 識 他 的 人 們 ， 都 知 道 他 是 一 個 慈 祥 、 忠 信 和 偉 大 的 人 物 。 他 常 常 樂 於 援 助 別 人 ， 無 分 貧 富 ， 無 分 中 外 。 他 在 中 國 約 有 六 十 年 的 歷 史 ， 他 的 熱 心 和 慈 愛 ， 實 堪 為 司 鐸 們 的 模 範 。 現 在 ， 他 死 了 ， 願 他 的 靈 魂 息 止 安 所 ， 永 享 真 福 。
