In August 1951, fresh from the courts of Tientsin where he was informed of his “crimes” and expelled from China, Father Henry Striethorst, SVD., stepped ashore in Hong Kong and began a quiet round of service to missionaries and needy people of every race and religion, which ended in a peaceful death at St. Teresa's Hospital on 21 April 1971.

He was born of a German father and English mother in 1898 in Twistringen, Lower Saxony. His mission career began at 14 in the S.V.D. Seminary at Steyl, Holland. It was interrupted for 3 years by the First World War in which he was decorated for valour. He was ordained in 1928 and that same year travelled to Tsingtao where he studied the language for a year. His first field of mission work (1930-45) was in the mountains and valleys of Shantung, and he had many adventures with bandits and undisciplined military men. Later he would recall with evident satisfaction how his sharp-shooting scared them off without harming them. During this period he was asked to be procurator (Business Manager) for the Mission and for a time the Vicar General of the diocese of Ichow. The year 1945 took him to Tientsin where the affairs of several Missions as well as Fujen University were under his care. This work ended in 1951 with his expulsion by the Communists.

His Hong Kong work (1951-1971) was interrupted only once - by a furlough in 1960 - and it was marked principally by regular and conscientious attention to the needs of every missionary who asked for help and of many a poor but proud person who could not be reached through other charities. Many families in Mainland China owe their survival to his generosity, but he never mentioned names or permitted his work to become public knowledge. Now it can be said - for the peace of mind of those who want to say “Thank You”. He would have said: “Better be quiet and say a prayer for me.”

來華工作四十助人無數

聖 言 會 港 區 總 務 蕭 禮 恪 神 父 於 一 九 七 一 年 四 月 廿 一 日 因 患 胃 癌 不 治 ， 在 九 龍 聖 德 肋 撒 醫 院 逝 世 ， 享 年 七 十 三 歲 。 蕭 鐸 遺 體 於 廿 三 日 上 午 十 時 運 往 跑 馬 地 聖 瑪 加 利 大 堂 由 徐 牧 奉 獻 安 息 彌 撒 後 ， 隨 即 運 往 跑 馬 地 天 主 教 墳 場 安 葬 。

按 蕭 禮 恪 神 父 ， 德 國 人 ， 一 八 九 八 年 於 下 薩 克 遜 區 出 生 ， 弱 年 十 四 入 聖 言 會 修 道 ， 被 遣 往 荷 蘭 聖 言 會 小 修 院 攻 讀 ， 第 一 次 世 界 大 戰 爆 發 期 間 服 兵 役 。 三 年 後 於 一 九 二 八 年 晉 鐸 後 ， 前 往 中 國 山 東 省 傳 教 ， 在 青 島 市 攻 讀 中 文 一 年 ， 自 一 九 三 ０ 年 至 一 九 四 五 年 間 在 山 東 省 各 地 區 傳 教 ， 曾 任 聖 言 會 該 區 總 務 及 副 省 長 之 職 。 一 九 四 五 年 赴 天 津 及 在 輔 仁 大 學 服 務 ， 直 至 一 九 五 一 年 為 中 共 驅 逐 出 境 為 止 。

在 過 去 二 十 年 間   (即 由 一 九 五 一 年 至 一 九 七 一 年) 蕭 鐸 在 港 區 幫 助 聖 言 會 的 發 展 工 作 。 蕭 鐸 一 生 暗 中 助 人 無 數 ， 但 他 不 允 受 助 者 透 露 自 己 的 名 字 。 蕭 鐸 在 中 國 度 過 了 平 凡 的 一 生 ， 但 他 的 一 生 ， 其 實 絕 不 平 凡 ， 其 英 豪 及 超 卓 處 在 於 默 默 工 作 ， 助 人 解 脫 艱 困 。

望 各 信 友 ， 尤 其 曾 受 過 蕭 鐸 協 助 之 信 友 ， 為 彼 靈 魂 祈 禱 ， 使 能 早 日 息 止 安 所 。
