Death of Father Cantore, P.I.M.E.
R.I.P.

Father Michael Cantore, PIME, who served in the Diocese of Hong Kong from 1924 to 1967, died in Italy on 24 May 1983, aged 82. He had fallen and broken a hip a few days before.

Father Cantore was born at Rivoli, Province of Turin, on 18 August 1900. He entered a seminary in 1913, joined the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) in 1922, and was ordained priest in Milan on 19 April 1924.

He arrived in Hong Kong in 1924, and, after language study, took up work in Kwangtung Province, first at Tam Shui, later as Rector of Wan Lak.

He went to Italy on sabbatical leave in 1939. The war prevented his return to Hong Kong so he did pastoral work in his native Rivoli till 1947.

On his return to Hong Kong in that year, he worked for a time at Taipo, but as turmoil was rising in Kwangtung he soon moved the Niam Ao, Waichau, where he became rector of the district.

In March, 1951, he and father De Ascaniis were interned in the Catholic Mission in Waichau City. There they were soon joined by Bishop Bianchi and Fathers Della Nina, Aletta and Pagani. Father Cantore was expelled from China on 12 October 1951.

After a short period as Rector at Yuen Long, he became Assistant Parish Priest at Precious Blood Church, Shamshuipo, remaining there till the erection of the new Parish of St. Francis of Assisi in 1955. He spent his remaining years in Hong Kong in the Bishop's House.

In 1967 he returned to Italy, to do administrative and pastoral work there. His last years were spent in the PIME Rest House.

Though 16 years have passed since his return to Italy, many in Hong Kong still remember Father Cantore, always smiling, always pleased to meet everyone, always provided with a pocketful of boiled sweets, which he would distribute to old and young with infectious gaiety - symbols and instruments of an apostolate of unaging sweetness.

宗 座 外 方 傳 教 會 會 士 簡 多 略 神 父 ， 於 一 九 八 三 年 五 月 廿 四 日 在 意 大 利 病 逝 ， 終 年 八 十 二 歲 ； 去 世 前 數 天 ， 他 不 慎 跌 倒 ， 坐 骨 斷 裂 。

簡 神 父 意 國 都 靈 人 ， 廿 二 歲 入 宗 座 外 方 傳 教 會 ， 一 九 二 四 年 在 米 蘭 晉 鐸 後 來 港 ， 學 習 粵 語 後 ， 到 廣 東 服 務 。

一 九 三 九 年 回 鄉 度 假 ， 由 於 戰 事 關 係 ， 直 至 一 九 四 七 年 才 回 港 ， 先 在 大 埔 服 務 。 後 轉 赴 惠 州 擔 任 牧 民 工 作 。 一 九 五 一 年 十 月 被 逐 離 境 。 到 港 後 先 在 元 朗 ， 後 到 深 水 埗 寶 血 堂 (即 現 在 的 聖 方 濟 各 堂) 任 助 理 司 鐸 。 四 年 後 定 居 主 教 公 署 。

一 九 六 七 年 ， 他 返 國 擔 任 行 政 和 牧 民 工 作 ， 最 近 幾 年 在 該 會 安 老 院 居 住 。

他 回 國 雖 已 十 六 年 ， 但 本 港 很 多 人 對 他 的 平 易 近 人 、 和 藹 可 親 的 態 度 仍 然 印 象 深 刻 。
