Death of Father Faury, S.J.
R.I.P.
Father Paul Faury, SJ, died suddenly of a
heart attack in Xavier House, Argyle Street, Kowloon, on 20 November 1984, aged 78.
Father Faury was born in France on the 23 June 1906. After military service he entered the
Society of Jesus on the 17 June 1927 and three years later was assigned to Shanghai for
missionary work. He studied for the priesthood there and was ordained priest on the 3 June
1938. In the troubled years that followed he was very active and filled many roles in the
life of the Church in Shanghai. These included being chaplain to the soldiers and the
police in the French Concession, teaching in Aurora University, chaplain to the Ste-Marie
Hospital, chaplain to the prisons and finally Assistant Pastor in St. Peter’s Parish,
Shanghai. After 23 years in Shanghai, he was declared a persona non great by the
government and expelled in July 1953. He then came to Hong Kong.
Shortly after his arrival in Hong Kong, Bishop Bianchi appointed him as chaplain to the
Shanghai Catholics living in Hong Kong. In 1953 there were many Shanghai persons recently
arrived here. Father Faury soon established contact and travelled around those parts of
Hong Kong and Kowloon where they were likely to be found. For over thirty years he was
based in St. Teresa’s Church and served the Shanghai Catholics with single-minded
devotedness. He assisted them at their marriages, baptized their children and
grandchildren, visited them always when they were sick, and performed the last rites when
they passed from this world. He formed a group of dedicated lay persons into a Sodality
and these have been his valiant helpers to the present day, he was especially generous to
the poor.
Father Faury as Assistant Pastor in St. Teresa’s Church was well known to the
parishioners, warm and affectionate in his relationship with them, always available for
counseling or confessions. For the past few years he lived in the parish because of
increasing infirmity but returned always on Tuesday to visit his Jesuit-community in
Argyle Street. It was there that he died suddenly while preparing to return to his parish,
at 4pm on Tuesday, the 20 November. He was 78 years of age.
For those who knew him well, Father Faury was a simple man who held strong, conservative
opinions and was not slow to express his convictions with ardour. He was pastoral and not
academically inclined. He was gifted with a Latin temperament in which emotions were
strongly evident. The Chinese flock assigned to him were truly fond of him. He did not
believe in democracy, at least in the Catholic Church, but this did not prevent him from
having very warm-hearted relations with the laity. They knew his good points and
weaknesses and could forgive him even if at times he was unreasonably angry with them. He
was basically a cheerful person and energetic. He brought joy to those he met in the
course of the day. For the six months preceding his sudden death, first he had been
seriously ill in hospital and then spent some months convalescing. Just three weeks before
his death, he felt in good form and returned to the parish full of life to resume full
work, He died in harness and this was the way he would have liked to go.

聖 德 肋 撒 堂 助 理 司 鐸 、 旅 港 滬 籍 教 友 神 師 、 耶 穌 會 服 保 祿 神 父 於 一 九 八 四 年 十 一 月 二 十 日 下 午 四 時 在 其 會 院 安 息 主 懷 ， 享 年 七 十 八 歲 。 本 月 廿 二 日 上 午 九 時 ， 服 神 父 的 棺 柩 停 放 在 聖 德 肋 撒 堂 供 教 友 瞻 仰 遺 容 。 服 神 父 身 穿 他 終 年 常 穿 的 中 國 式 白 長 衫 ， 手 握 念 珠 ， 胸 前 掛 著 十 字 聖 架 ， 安 祥 地 躺 在 棺 木 中 ， 四 週 鮮 花 圍 繞 。 前 往 參 禮 與 祈 禱 哀 悼 者 絡 繹 不 絕 。
下 午 二 時 舉 行 殯 葬 彌 撒 ， 由 胡 振 中 主 教 主 禮 ， 參 加 共 祭 者 有 鄧 以 明 總 主 教 ， 艾 巧 智 副 主 教 ， 林 焯 煒 副 主 教 ， 耶 穌 會 朱 蒙 泉 神 父 ， 顏 愛 群 神 父 等 約 五 十 人 。 參 禮 教 友 不 下 千 人 ， 共 同 為 服 神 父 祈 禱 ， 求 主 速 賜 升 天 。
胡 主 教 在 彌 撒 前 稱 揚 服 保 祿 神 父 一 生 為 主 犧 牲 服 務 ， 因 此 這 台 追 思 彌 撒 也 可 稱 為 感 恩 祭 ， 並 特 別 為 上 海 教 友 祈 禱 。
彌 撒 中 朱 蒙 泉 神 父 證 道 ， 簡 述 服 神 父 的 生 平 ， 特 別 提 及 服 神 父 自 一 九 五 三 年 被 逐 抵 港 之 後 ， 受 白 英 奇 主 教 的 委 托 ， 指 導 本 港 上 海 教 友 。 他 辛 勞 服 務 ， 協 助 主 任 司 鐸 關 心 教 友 ， 三 十 年 如 一 日 ， 深 受 教 友 的 愛 戴 。 但 他 已 積 勞 成 疾 ， 至 本 月 二 十 日 ， 心 臟 病 突 發 ， 蒙 主 寵 召 。 服 神 父 為 愛 人 而 熱 誠 獻 身 ， 他 生 時 常 感 謝 主 教 及 主 任 神 父 給 他 為 最 小 弟 兄 服 務 的 機 會 。 朱 神 父 更 鼓 勵 教 友 做 服 神 父 所 囑 咐 的 事 ， 就 是 熱 心 事 主 愛 人 ， 以 報 答 服 神 父 的 恩 德 。 最 後 朱 神 父 稱 揚 服 神 父 光 輝 的 一 生 ， 做 到 了 基 督 的 司 鐸 。
彌 撒 後 ， 滿 堂 教 友 圍 繞 棺 柩 向 服 神 父 告 別 ， 其 中 許 多 教 友 是 由 服 神 父 勸 化 進 教 ， 因 此 在 告 別 禮 中 ， 悲 淚 直 流 ； 有 些 教 友 憶 起 服 神 父 五 十 年 來 為 中 國 教 會 默 默 耕 耘 ， 如 今 去 世 ， 深 感 哀 痛 。
禮 畢 出 殯 ， 安 葬 於 跑 馬 地 天 主 教 墳 場 。 執 紼 的 神 長 及 教 友 共 約 二 百 人 。 但 願 他 在 天 鄉 繼 續 為 中 國 及 他 的 教 友 祈 禱 。
服 神 父 於 一 九 ０ 六 年 生 於 法 國 。 一 九 二 七 年 被 派 到
上 海 傳 教 。 一 九 三 八 年 在 上 海 晉 鐸 ， 後 在 震 旦 大 學
任 教 ， 並 任 廣 慈 醫 院 指 導 司 鐸 以 及 聖 伯 多 祿 堂 助 理
司 鐸 。 於 一 九 五 三 年 被 逐 抵 港 ， 為 本 港 教 會 服 務 直
至 去 世 。
