Father Paul Kretsch, SJ, a member of the
Jesuit Community in Casa Ricci, Macao, died in San Januario Hospital on the morning of 8
December 1972 after a short illness, aged 70.
After a concelebrated Mass at 4pm on 9 December the remains were brought from Sto
Agostinho Church to St. Michael’s Cemetery. Bishop Tavares of Macao officiated at the
graveside.
Father Kretsch was born in Paris on 28 July 1902. He studied philosophy for two years in
Rome before joining the Society of Jesus on 7 May 1926. After a two-year noviceship and
further study he came to China in October 1933. He studied Chinese and then went on to
study theology and was ordained priest on 4 June 1938 in Shanghai, with about 20 other
Jesuits.
Soon after completion of his studies he was appointed to teach theology in Zikawei
Seminary. This was to be his life’s work. He carried on during the war years and for six
years under a communist government. Towards the end of 1954 he was expelled from China. He
arrived in Macao in February 1955. Within a few weeks he took up the study of Cantonese,
nothing daunted by having to learn a new dialect in middle age.
In the following year he was appointed professor of dogma in the diocesan seminary of
Macao and held that post until the major seminary was closed in summer, 1967. Though he
was no longer needed to teach theology, he stayed on as spiritual father to the
seminarians in the minor seminary. He had always been valued as a spiritual director and
now he devoted himself wholly to this task, both inside and outside the seminary, with no
thought of retirement. He also made frequent visits to Hong Kong to preach retreats and
give spiritual direction. The large number of mourners who followed his coffin to the
grave was a tribute to his success in this field.

耶 穌 會 會 士 查 仕 敏 神 父 於 一 九 七 二 年 十 二 月 八 日 在 澳 門 山 頂 醫 院 病 逝 ， 享 年 七 十 歲 。 查 神 父 為 法 籍 耶 穌 會 會 士 。 一 九 三 三 年 來 華 ， 一 九 三 八 年 在 上 海 徐 家 匯 晉 陞 鐸 品 。 曾 執 教 於 上 海 徐 家 匯 大 修 院 ， 直 至 一 九 五 四 年 被 迫 離 華 ， 轉 在 澳 門 服 務 ， 並 曾 任 澳 門 聖 若 瑟 大 修 院 神 學 教 授 及 小 修 院 神 師 。
查 神 父 自 一 九 六 七 年 開 始 便 專 心 致 力 於 神 修 指 導 工
作 ； 每 月 照 例 來 港 數 天 ， 擔 任 避 靜 或 神 修 指 導 工 作
。 查 神 父 為 天 主 為 人 靈 鞠 躬 盡 瘁 ， 貢 獻 了 自 己 的 一
生 ， 盼 各 信 友 為 彼 靈 魂 祈 禱 。
