Brother Paul O’Connell, F.S.C.

Friends, past pupils, colleagues will hear
with sadness the death of Brother Paul O’Connell, who contributed so much to education
during his 72 years in Hong Kong.
Brother Paul, in his 91 year, recently came back from a holiday in his native land,
Ireland. He was born in Laois, Eire, and joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, and
was appointed to St. Joseph’s College where he taught and was for many years in charge of
the boarding department. In 1930, he was appointed Headmaster of St. Joseph’s College
Branch in Chatham Road which became La Salle College on a new site in 1932.
After retirement he spent his last years in De La Salle, Fanling, occupying himself in the
garden and the study of flowers which was his hobby. The memory of this grand old man is
enshrined in the hearts of his old pupils of St. Joseph’s and La Salle who will not forget
his untiring efforts. His genial personality will ever be remembered by those he taught
and colleagues who worked with him. He leaves behind the kindest of memories, courtesy and
devotion to duty.
Father E. Neira, OP., officiated at the funeral and led the concelebrants, Fathers S.
Einaudi, V.G., D. Bazzo, PIME, F. Cronin, SJ., and J. Foley, SJ., in the Requiem Mass at
La Salle College. Brother Felix paid a touching tribute. Mr. A.J. Reeve, Assistant
Director of Education, represented the Department of Education.

九一高齡溘然長逝
生平熱愛教育工作
矢志獻身作育英才
基 督 學 校 修 士 會 (喇 沙 修 士 會
) 之 保 祿 修 士 ， 於 一 九 七 九 年 十 一 月 六 日 在 九 龍 聖 德 肋 撒 醫 院 溘 然 長 逝 ， 安 息 主 懷 ， 享 年 九 十 一 歲 。保 祿 修 士 原 籍 愛 爾 蘭 ， 年 輕 時 熱 愛 教 育 工 作 ， 於 是 入 基 督 學 校 修 士 會 修 道 ， 矢 志 獻 身 教 育 青 年 。 十 九 歲 那 年 即 奉 派 來 港 服 務 迄 今 。 一 九 三 ０ 年 被 委 任 為 喇 沙 書 院 前 身 的 聖 若 瑟 書 院 校 長 ， 為 社 會 作 育 英 才 。 退 休 後 一 直 居 住 於 粉 嶺 喇 沙 書 院 會 院 中 ， 以 研 究 園 藝 安 渡 晚 年 。
本 月 八 日 ， 上 午 八 時 十 五 分 ， 艾 巧 智 副 主 教 、 唐 多
明 神 父 、 霍 理 義 神 父 、 龔 樂 年 神 父 等 假 座 九 龍 喇 沙
書 院 為 保 祿 修 士 舉 行 安 息 共 祭 彌 撒 。 參 與 者 除 該 會
會 士 及 喇 沙 書 院 舊 生 外 ， 還 有 保 祿 修 士 的 生 前 友 好
及 不 少 教 育 界 知 名 人 士 云 。
