Death of Veteran China Missioner Father O’Melia, M.M.

News has just reached Hong Kong of the death of a heart attack in Philadelphia, USA of Father Thomas O’Melia, M.M.

Father O’Melia will be remembered by many people in Hong Kong for his popular textbooks on the study of Cantonese.

Father O’Melia came to China in 1923 the year he was ordained a priest. He was first stationed in Yeung Kong, then in Sancian Island, both in Kwangtung Province. In 1934 when the Maryknoll Fathers opened their house for language studies in Stanley he came there as the Director of Cantonese Studies. In 1938 he published his First Year Cantonese in four volumes which was a tremendous success and is still in demand.

During World War II he returned to Maryknoll houses in the United States and again returned to Hong Kong in 1959, again as Director of Language Studies in Stanley and there he published his revised edition, in two volumes, of his First Year Cantonese.

Again returning to the United States in 1966 he worked in the Chinese Parish in Chicago from 1967-68. After that he retired to the Maryknoll headquarters in New York but continued his Chinese language researches.

There will be a Concelebrated Mass for the repose of his soul in St. Joseph’s Church, 7 Garden Road, on Tuesday, 7 August 1973 at 6pm.

心臟病突發逝世

美 國 瑪 利 諾 會 會 士 李 重 光 神 父 因 心 臟 病 突 發 ， 最 近 在 美 國 費 城 去 世 。

李 神 父 於 一 九 二 三 年 晉 鐸 後 ， 隨 即 來 華 傳 教 ， 在 廣 東 各 地 服 務 。

一 九 三 四 年 ， 瑪 利 諾 會 在 赤 柱 開 設 語 言 研 究 所 ， 他 擔 任 廣 州 話 研 究 主 任 。

一 九 三 八 年 ， 他 出 版 了 一 套 廣 州 話 課 本 。 一 共 四 冊 ， 至 今 仍 甚 流 行 。

第 二 次 世 界 大 戰 期 間 ， 他 返 回 美 國 會 院 ， 一 九 五 九 年 重 新 來 港 ， 擔 任 赤 柱 的 語 言 研 究 所 所 長 ； 在 任 期 間 ， 他 將 已 出 版 的 四 冊 廣 州 話 課 本 修 訂 ， 輯 成 兩 冊 。

一 九 六 六 年 返 美 ， 在 芝 加 哥 的 華 僑 堂 區 服 務 ， 繼 續 致 力 廣 州 話 研 究 。

本 月 七 日 (星 期 二) 下 午 六 時 正 ， 港 島 花 園 道 聖 若 瑟 堂 ， 將 舉 行 追 思 彌 撒 ， 為 已 故 李 神 父 祈 禱 。
