Fr. Vincent Bernardini, S.D.B.

News has been received of the death of Fr. Vincent Bernardini, S.D.B., who was well-known in Hong Kong between 1927 and 1949. Fr. Bernardini died in the Salesian House at Lanusei, on 29 June 1962 at the age of 75. He came to China in 1911 and was appointed vice-superior of the Isitituto Salesiano in Macao in the same year. Later he was appointed Rector. In 1926 he was transferred to Shanghai but the trouble in 1927 and the temporary closure of the Salesian School in the city resulted in Fr. Bernardini’s being transferred to Hong Kong, where the Salesians were taking up work for the first time. Fr. Bernardini was appointed the first Rector of St. Louis School, which was taken over by the Salesians in October 1927.
In 1935 the Aberdeen Industrial School was opened and Fr. Bernardini was its first Principal. In 1941 he was transferred to Macao and many will remember him for the enormous task he had in organizing and directing the distribution of rice and oil during the war years. At the end of the war he was reappointed Principal of Aberdeen Industrial School, but in 1949 his ill-health obliged his superiors to send him back to his native place, Lanusei in Sardinia.
A Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated for the happy repose
of his soul in St. Anthony’s Church, Pokfulam Road, at 6pm on Monday, 30 July.

港 辦 理 教 育 多 年 。 港 方 慈 幼 會 已 定 於 七 月 三 十 日 (星 期 一) 下 午 六 時 假 聖 安 多 尼 堂 舉 行 追 思 彌 撒 。
