Death of Father W. Mulcahy, M.M.
Former Local Superior of Maryknoll
R.I.P.
Father William P. Mulcahy, MM, Local Superior
of the Maryknoll Missioners in Hong Kong in the 1950s, died last week in Chicago, aged 69.
Father Mulcahy was born in 1903. He was ordained priest in 1929, went to Wuchow, Kwangsi,
and worked there as a missioner till he was expelled by the Communist over twenty years
later.
After expulsion, he stayed in Hong Kong where he was soon appointed Maryknoll Local
Superior. In this post, he directed the intense Maryknoll effort to give all possible help
to the refugees who were then crowding into Hong Kong. This work, a glowing chapter in the
history of Maryknoll and in the history of the Church in Hong Kong.
Father Mulcahy took a vigorous personal part in the work, particularly in the building of
one-storey houses for homeless refugees. The hillside at Ngau Tau Kok is still dotted with
monuments to his initiative and energy.
On ceasing to be Local Superior in 1958, he became chaplain to the USA Navy centre at
Fenwick Pier. After a short period he was recalled to the USA to become Pastor of the
Chinese Parish of the Transfiguration, New York. He was later transferred to the
Pastor-ship of the Chinese parish in Chicago, where he remained till his death.
