Death of Sister Francis Xavier Mapleback
R.I.P.

Sister Francis Xavier Mapleback of the Columban Sisters died suddenly at Marymount School, Blue Pool Road, Happy Valley, on Tuesday, 28 June 1988, aged 87.

Sister Francis Xavier, born in Australia at the beginning of this century, was one of the earliest members of the Missionary Sisters of St. Columban. She served for some time in mainland China and for some time in the Philippines, but the greater part of her long life was devoted to the care of the sick in the Ruttonjee Sanatorium.

Owing to her great age, her last years here were spent in semiretirement. Her last weeks were spent in preparation going to Ireland for full retirement. She was loath to leave the people whom she had come to love and for whom she had worked for so long. Her sudden death solved that problem. If she could have foreseen it she would certainly have rejoiced.

The concelebration of the Mass of the Resurrection of on Friday, 1 July, was led by a Columban Father, Father E. Kelly. The large number of concelebrants and the large congregation of mourners testified to abiding appreciation for a life of devoted service.

She was buried in the Columban plot in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Happy Valley.
