Sister Mary Ricci de Cain, M.M.

The Maryknoll Sisters are rejoicing with Sister Mary de Ricci Cain as she celebrates her 60^th anniversary of entrance into the Maryknoll Sisters.

She entered Maryknoll in New York in 1923 and was sent to Hong Kong at the completion of her training in 1927. After her arrival in Hong Kong, she worked in Maryknoll Convent School, Kowloon, and Holy Spirit, Caine Road, until the Japanese Occupation in 1942. Along with many others including several Maryknoll Sisters, she was interned for six months at Stanley. In August 1942, she was able to go to Kweilin where she was involved in refugee work with many girls from Hong Kong and other war areas near the coast.

In 1945, with four other Sisters, Sister Mary de Ricci went to India where she worked with the Loretto Sisters. A year later she was able to return to Hong Kong on time for the re-opening of the Maryknoll Convent School in January 1946.

In the Spring of this year, she retruned to the Maryknoll Sisters Centre in New York to take part in a Renewal course and to visit members of her family in eastern Canada and in California. She returned at the beginning of September and in now living and working at Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital, Wong Tai sin.

Sister Mary De Ricci Cain, M.M., died peacefully at our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital on 24 February 1987, at the age of 83.

Sister Mary De Ricci entered the Maryknoll Sisters from Prince Edward Island, Canada, on the 23 September 1923. She received her first mission assignment after completing her tertiary education at Mt. St. Vincent College in New York.

Her sixty years of mission were spent almost entirely in Hong Kong, where she was closely associated with Maryknoll Sisters’ educational works. She was principal of Holy Spirit School (later to become Maryknoll Sisters School) from 1928-1941 and from 1948-1954 and of Maryknoll Convent School from 1959-1965. After being released from internment in Stanley Prison Camp during World War II, she went to China for two years and then to India where she taught for one year, until she returned to Hong Kong in December 1945.

After retiring from formal education work, Sister De Ricci helped in the Medical Records Department of Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital.

In her last year she lived with and witnessed to the elderly at the hostel for the elderly managed by the Maryknoll Sisters in Yuen Long.

The Mass of Resurrection for her burial was celebrated at St. Teresa’s Church. Kowloon on Friday, 26 February. The burial was in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Happy Valley.

曾 在 香 港 天 主 教 會 服 務 達 六 十 餘 年 的 甘 修 女 ， 已 於 一 九 八 七 年 二 月 廿 四 日 在 聖 母 醫 院 安 息 主 懷 ， 享 年 八 十 三 歲 。

甘 修 女 隸 屬 瑪 利 諾 女 修 會 ， 她 是 在 一 九 二 三 年 加 入 該 會 ， 在 紐 約 聖 雲 先 學 院 完 成 專 上 教 育 之 後 ， 便 開 始 其 傳 教 工 作 。

隨 後 ， 她 由 美 國 來 港 服 務 。

她 在 本 港 的 足 跡 遍 佈 各 處 。

她 在 香 港 六 十 年 來 的 傳 教 工 作 ， 主 要 在 教 育 方 面 ， 她 是 一 九 二 八 年 至 一 九 四 一 年 及 一 九 四 八 年 至 一 九 五 四 年 的 聖 神 學 校 校 長 (即 瑪 利 諾 修 女 學 校 前 身) ， 一 九 五 九 年 至 一 九 六 五 年 更 出 任 瑪 利 諾 修 院 學 校 校 長 一 職 。

在 第 二 次 世 界 大 戰 期 間 ， 甘 修 女 曾 被 禁 錮 在 赤 柱 監 獄 的 集 中 營 ， 獲 釋 後 曾 往 中 國 工 作 兩 年 ， 其 後 ， 她 再 往 印 度 從 事 一 年 的 教 育 工 作 ， 並 於 一 九 四 五 年 重 返 香 港 。

甘 修 女 自 退 休 後 便 在 聖 母 醫 院 協 助 醫 療 紀 錄 部 門 的 工 作 ； 去 年 開 始 ， 她 一 直 住 在 瑪 利 諾 女 修 會 在 元 朗 開 辦 的 老 人 宿 舍 ， 渡 過 生 命 的 最 後 一 年 ， 給 予 住 院 的 老 人 生 活 見 證 。

甘 修 女 的 追 思 彌 撒 已 於 二 月 廿 六 日 在 聖 德 肋 撒 堂 舉 行 ， 隨 後 安 葬 於 港 島 跑 馬 地 天 主 教 墳 場 。
