Sister Sylvester Powers RGS
(1907-1991)

Sister Mary Sylvester Powers was born in a suburb of Boston in the United States on 7 February 1907, one of five children.

Her parents died while most of the children were still young and in later life three of them became Good Shepherd Sisters.

In 1935 Sister volunteered for the Good Shepherd Sisters’ mission in Shanghai.

She quickly learned enough of the dialect to care for a large group of indigent children until the Communist takeover in 1949.

With the help of the Legio of Mary, all the children in her care had been placed with good families before she left China in 1951.

After arriving in overcrowded Hong Kong, the Sisters, with over 60 underprivileged teenagers, lived for four years in abandoned army huts until the Hong Kong government assisted them in building their present residence on Clear Water Bay Road.

Sister had an attractive personality and a remarkable intuition. In her ministry she strove to make known the compassionate and merciful love of Jesus the Good Shepherd, especially towards the young girls and women under her care.

She had the ability of making each one feel very precious to her and in the words of St. Mary Euphrasia she would say: “I only loved, but I loved with all the strength of my soul.”

善 牧 會 鮑 修 女 ， 於 一 九 九 一 年 一 月 十 八 日 病 逝 嘉 諾 撒 醫 院 ， 享 年 八 十 三 歲 。

鮑 修 女 於 一 九 ０ 七 年 二 月 七 日 在 美 國 波 士 頓 出 生 。 家 中 共 五 兄 弟 姊 妹 ， 其 中 姊 妹 均 加 入 善 牧 會 。 鮑 修 女 於 一 九 三 五 年 到 上 海 傳 教 ， 服 務 當 地 有 需 要 的 女 青 年 。 一 九 五 一 年 來 港 並 照 顧 有 特 別 需 要 的 女 青 年 。 她 一 生 愛 主 愛 人 ， 努 力 不 懈 地 傳 揚 基 督 善 牧 精 神 。

會 方 請 各 界 信 眾 為 她 祈 主 以 永 光 照 之 。
