Prayers of new hope in Hong Kong following election of Pope Leo XIV

The Catholic community in Hong Kong welcomed the election of Pope Leo XIV with deep gratitude and hope, offering prayers for God’s blessings and strength to be with him as he begins his mission to shepherd the Church in a diverse and rapidly evolving global landscape.

In a press release issued on May 9 by the Diocese of Hong Kong, the day following the pope’s election, Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., bishop of Hong Kong, joined the faithful in offering prayers for the new Holy Father. The statement highlighted the cardinal’s appreciation for Pope Leo’s commitment to building bridges, promoting a synodal Church, and prioritising the needs of the poor - core themes that have inspired Catholics around the world to work towards a more inclusive and compassionate Church.

Prayerful support has since echoed throughout the territory. On May 10, during a Mass for vocations held at Christ the King Chapel in Causeway Bay, vicar general, Father Paul Kam Po-wai, gave thanks for the courage of the new pontiff in accepting his sacred calling. “His courage has set a good example for us to respond to the call of God,” he remarked.

At the closing ceremony of a Caritas fundraising campaign on May 9, Father David Chan, diocesan procurator, led prayers asking that God might grant Pope Leo the wisdom, strength and steadfast faith to lead the Church, uniting the faithful under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Tse Ting-ting, diocesan new media editor and member of the Diocesan Youth Commission, was assigned to cover the papal conclave in Rome for the youth online platform, Boiling Point. Sharing on social media, she described the experience as both physically challenging and spiritually enriching, as she endured the fluctuating weather in St. Peter’s Square.

She was especially moved by the sacred rituals of the conclave, as well as the modern-day measure of the setting aside of mobile phones - an act that, she noted, underscored the cardinals’ desire to place the glory of God and the welfare of the Church above all personal concerns.

Freeman Leung, a Catholic social worker dedicated to grassroots outreach, expressed joy at the newly elected pope’s choice of name. Recalling Pope Leo XIIP’s landmark encyclical, Rerum Novarum, which addressed the rights and dignity of workers, Leung hoped that Pope Leo XIV would continue the Church’s legacy of social justice and care for the poor.

“In today’s world, the pope faces many challenges, from internal Church dynamics to heightened scrutiny on social media,” he said. “I will pray for his guidance and strength as he leads the Church through these turbulent times.”

Cheryl Chow, a Catholic artist, shared that after listening to the pope’s first homily and learning about his missionary background, she was deeply moved. “I am thankful that God has given us a pope who cherishes the teachings of the Church and embraces diverse communities. I pray that he may continue to proclaim Christ’s truth to all people, and that divine wisdom may sustain him in reaching hearts both within and beyond the Church,” she said.

Icy Lam, mother of Lucas - a Hong Kong delegate to World Children’s Day last year - expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV will help bring children in Hong Kong and China closer to God. She shared that during a jubilee pilgrimage to St. Joseph’s Parish in Fanling, her children wrote prayers for the new pope and placed them on a special prayer wall.

Gracy Tong, vice provincial coordinator of Faith and Light Hong Kong, echoed these sentiments, saying she would continue to pray that Pope Leo XIV carries forward the Church’s attention to people with disabilities in line with the example set by Pope Francis. She recalled with gratitude that she and around 10 community members were able to pay their final respects as Pope Francis lay in state in St. Peter’s Basilica upon their arrival in Rome on April 25, as part of the jubilee pilgrimage for people with disabilities.

Reflecting further on her time in Rome, Tse described the conclave as a deeply spiritual event, often misunderstood by secular media. “It is not a political contest, but a sacred time of prayer and discernment - a process of listening together to the Holy Spirit,” she said. “Being there with journalists from around the world was truly eye-opening.”

We need communication that listens and gathers the voices of the weak, pope says

Pope Leo XIV asked journalists to be peacemakers by shunning prejudice and anger in their reporting, and he called for the release of journalists imprisoned for their work.

“The suffering of these imprisoned journalists challenges the conscience of nations and the international community, calling on all of us to safeguard the precious gift of free speech and of the press,” the pope said on May 12.

Not counting his meeting May 10 with the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo’s first special audience was reserved for members of the media who covered his election and the death of Pope Francis.

“Thank you for the work you have done and continue to do in these days, which is truly a time of grace for the Church,” he told the media representatives and staff of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication.

The new pope particularly thanked reporters “for what you have done to move beyond stereotypes and clichés through which we often interpret Christian life and the life of the church itself.”

After giving his speech and his apostolic blessing, the pope personally greeted dozens of journalists. One asked if he would be traveling home to the United States soon, the pope responded, “I don’t think so.”

Asked about the May 13 feast of Our Lady of Fatima, Pope Leo, referring to himself, said, “Cardinal Prevost had planned to go, but the plans changed.”

Another reporter asked the pope if he planned to fulfill Pope Francis’ promise of going to Turkey this year to celebrate the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea with Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. The council was held in 325 in what is now Iznik, Turkey.

“We are preparing for it,” the pope responded. But he did not say when the trip would be.

In his formal talk, Pope Leo focused on how the media can promote division and discord or peace.

The gospel beatitude, “Blessed are the peacemakers,” is a challenge for everyone, he said, but especially for the media. It calls “each one of you to strive for a different kind of communication, one that does not seek consensus at all costs, does not use aggressive words, does not follow the culture of competition and never separates the search for truth from the love with which we must humbly seek it.”

He said, “Peace begins with each one of us: in the way we look at others, listen to others and speak about others. In this sense, the way we communicate is of fundamental importance: we must say ‘no’ to the war of words and images, we must reject the paradigm of war.”

The words and style journalists use are “crucial,” he said, because communication is not only about transmitting information; it should create a culture and “human and digital environments that become spaces for dialogue and discussion.”

The pope said, “We do not need loud, forceful communication, but rather communication that is capable of listening and of gathering the voices of the weak who have no voice.”

He urged, “Let us disarm words and we will help to disarm the world. Disarmed and disarming communication allows us to share a different view of the world and to act in a manner consistent with our human dignity.”

The new pope said, “You are at the forefront of reporting on conflicts and aspirations for peace, on situations of injustice and poverty and on the silent work of so many people striving to create a better world. For this reason, I ask you to choose consciously and courageously the path of communication in favour of peace.”

The pope had told members of the College of Cardinals that he chose his name in homage to Pope Leo XIII, recognising the need to renew Catholic social teaching to face today’s new industrial revolution and the developments of artificial intelligence “that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labour.”

That technology, he told the reporters, poses special challenges for them. “I am thinking in particular of artificial intelligence, with its immense potential, which nevertheless requires responsibility and discernment in order to ensure that it can be used for the good of all, so that it can benefit all of humanity.”

Editorial
Our Pope Leo XIV

The conclave to elect a new pope took only two days and four rounds of voting to select the new pontiff - Robert Francis Prevost from Chicago, USA, who became the first pope in history from the United States. Public attention has focused on several aspects of his background. First, his American nationality immediately brings to mind figures like Washington and Lincoln, but also the current US president, Donald Trump, who is known for recently imposing significant trade tariffs on various countries and for his domineering personality.

However, he is not entirely American by heritage: Pope Leo XIV, has French, Italian, and Spanish ancestry. After his ordination, he was sent to work in Chulucanas, Piura, Peru, in South America. In 1988, he was assigned to Trujillo, Peru’s third-largest city, where he served in impoverished suburbs for nine years, engaging in pastoral work alongside the vulnerable, demonstrating humility and devoid of any arrogance - completely unlike his country’s leader.

The second point of interest is whether Pope Leo will continue the unfinished work of his predecessor, Pope Francis, particularly the Synod on Synodality. Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., of Hong Kong, who voted at the conclave, spoke in a video interview from the Vatican on May 9, noting that both he and many cardinals were delighted to hear the new pope mention “walking together” in his first address to encourage everyone to “move forward courageously” and to embrace marginalised groups, which he deemed very significant.

The relationship between the Vatican and China is another topic of widespread interest. Since his episcopal ordination, Cardinal Stephen has worked tirelessly to position Hong Kong as a “bridge Church” between the universal Church and Beijing to connect two otherwise disconnected entities.

In the interview, he shared that the new pope has visited China and is familiar with its culture. He also agrees with his predecessor’s approach to the Church in China, emphasising a path of communication and dialogue. Cardinal Stephen added that, following the example of John Cardinal Tong Hon, who had presented a statue of Our Lady of Sheshan to Pope Francis, he gifted Pope Leo XIV with a small statue of Our Lady of Sheshan, inviting him not to forget the Church and people of China. In response, the new pope nodded in agreement.

The cardinal added that, depending on the pope’s needs, the Diocese of Hong Kong would “build bridges and pave roads” between the universal Church and Beijing within its capacity.

According to Vatican News, the new pope chose the name Leo XIV as a tribute to Pope Leo XIII, particularly for his 1891 encyclical, Rerum Novarum, which pioneered modern Catholic social teaching. In these turbulent times, may we humbly equip ourselves with empathy to help, accompany, and listen to marginalised communities, walking alongside the poor and the vulnerable.

Help each other walk in love and truth, Pope Leo says in first Sunday address

With a huge and festive crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV led his first Sunday recitation of the “Regina Coeli” prayer and urged all Catholics to pray for vocations, especially to the priesthood and religious life.

Before the pope appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on May 11, the crowd was entertained by dozens of marching bands and folkloristic dance troupes who had marched into the square after attending an outdoor Mass for the Jubilee of Bands and Popular Entertainment.

Pope Leo also noted that it was Mother’s Day in Italy, the United States and elsewhere. “I send a special greeting to all mothers with a prayer for them and for those who are already in heaven,” he said. “Happy holiday to all moms!”

In his main address, Pope Leo said it was a “gift” to lead the crowd for the first time on the Sunday when the Church proclaims a passage from John 10 “where Jesus reveals himself as the true Shepherd, who knows and loves his sheep and gives his life for them.”

It was also Good Shepherd Sunday, the day the Catholic Church offers special prayers for vocations, especially to the priesthood and religious life.

“It is important that young men and women on their vocational journey find acceptance, listening and encouragement in their communities, and that they can look up to credible models of generous dedication to God and to their brothers and sisters,” the pope said.

Noting that Pope Francis had released a message in March in preparation for the day of prayer, Pope Leo told the crowd, “Let us take up the invitation that Pope Francis left us in his message for today: the invitation to welcome and accompany young people.”

The new pope said, “And let us ask our heavenly Father to assist us in living in service to one another, each according to his or her state of life, shepherds after his own heart, capable of helping one another to walk in love and truth.”

Setting aside his prepared text, he told young people in the square, “Do not be afraid! Welcome the call of the Church and of Christ the Lord.”

After reciting the “Regina Coeli,” he mentioned how the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe was celebrated on May 8, the day of his election.

While that is reason to celebrate, he said, “‘the Third World War is being fought piecemeal,’ as Pope Francis often said. I, too, appeal to the leaders of the world, repeating this ever-relevant plea: Never again war!”

Pope Leo prayed for the people of Ukraine, saying, “May everything possible be done to achieve as soon as possible an authentic, just and lasting peace. May all prisoners be freed, and may the children return to their families.” Ukraine says thousands of children have been forcibly taken to Russia during the war.

The pope also told the crowd, “I am deeply saddened by what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Let the fighting cease immediately. Humanitarian aid must be given to the exhausted civilian population, and all hostages must be released.”

He praised India and Pakistan for reaching a ceasefire agreement, but asked, “But how many other conflicts are there in the world?”

Pope Leo entrusted his “heartfelt appeal” for peace to Mary, “Queen of Peace, that she may present it to the Lord Jesus to obtain for us the miracle of peace.”

Earlier in the day, Pope Leo had celebrated Mass at an altar near the tomb of St. Peter in the grotto of St. Peter’s Basilica. Father Alejandro Moral Anton, the prior general of the Order of St. Augustine, to which the pope belonged, was the principal celebrant.

Afterward, the Vatican press office said, he stopped to pray at the tombs of popes who are buried in the grotto.

Italian officials estimated 100,000 people were in St. Peter’s Square or on the surrounding streets to join the new pope for the midday prayer.

On the importance of praying for the new pope

“The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful” (James 5:16)

My dear young friends,

Greetings in the Lord! It is my hope that this message finds you well and full of God’s holy grace. As the world rejoices at the coming of a new pope, Pope Leo XIV, let me talk to you about the importance of praying for him. As full members of the Church, the Body of Christ, you and I are called to support and uplift one another in faith and prayer. This simple message tries to emphasise the pivotal role of the pope as the pastor of the universal Church and how your prayers can strengthen him in his ministry, especially in this present age.

The traditional white smoke is a symbol of a new beginning for the one who is vested with the mission to tend to the Lord’s sheep (John 21:17). A look at history and tradition will tell us that Christ entrusted the ministry of serving the universality of the Church to the Apostle Peter. The Bishop of Rome, as the successor of Peter, carries on this ministry, strengthening the brethren in common faith, serving as a rock, and shepherding the Church (Pope John XXIII, Ad Petri Cathedram, No. 27). This meaningful, yet immense mission comes with numerous challenges, including promoting unity, upholding Church teachings, to name a few of them, without falling to mention the various contemporary issues he will be called to face.

This invitation to pray for him is based on the fact that prayer is essential deepening our union with Christ, and at the same time, it gives us the strength to continue witnessing to his message of love as light and salt of the world. Our beloved Pope St. John Paul II reminds us that “without that union with Christ which is fostered through prayer our energy flags, we lose fervour and we run the risk of becoming as “a sounding brass or tinkling cymbal” (Homily, Celebration of the Word with priests, religious and laity, 1984).

Dear Young Friends, we pray for the pope because we strongly believe as Christians that the foundation and fruitfulness of every ministry in the Church depend on a living union with Christ, maintained and nourished by prayer. Without this constant connection to Him, our Lord, we lose our identity, and mission and ministry become “our own business”.

Here is a suggestion: pray for the pope’s intentions, for his health and safety, and for his guidance in leading the Church. After Christ’s example, the pope’s sacramental ministry, centered on the Eucharist, makes him an intercessor with God for the whole Christian community and beyond. As young people, I know how creative you are. Therefore, use your own words to pray for the new pope as you can pray for a friend, a parent or a relative. With this comes the invitation to not consider him as a distant figure, but as a family member who needs your support and care as well. The Church is a family, our family! This awareness will surely enhance our togetherness and proximity in faith, and will help tear down the walls that may exist in our midst.

My dear friends, all ministry requires the support of the Christian community, especially through prayer for each other. As I said at the beginning of this sharing, you are members of the Christian community and as such, your prayers contribute to the well-being of the entire Church and enhance its mission here and now.

I invite you to continue praying for our universal pastor, Pope Leo XIV, that he may be strengthened in his ministry and that the Church may be united in faith and love.

May we all, young, old or teen journey together with Pope Leo XIV, to be witnesses to Christ’s love, and live for the things from above.

Truly yours,
Dominique Mukonda, CICM

Pope Leo XIV: the right person for this moment in history

Based on an interview with Emilce Cuda, dubbed Pope Francis’ Catholic social teaching expert in the Vatican, this article examines the continuity and bravery of the new pope, as reported by Religión Digital (Spain)

Following four rounds of voting in the conclave, the College of Cardinals elected Pope Leo XIV - and in the words of Vatican theologian, Emilce Cuda, the choice represents not just a successor to St. Peter, but a successor to the vision and pastoral path initiated by Pope Francis.

Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost of the Order of St. Augustin, an American by birth and Latin American by mission as well as a Peruvian citizen, has been elected to lead the Catholic Church at a time Cuda describes as “a moment in history that demands both continuity and courageous renewal.”

Cuda, an Argentine theologian and secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, shared her reflections on the new pope in an interview with Religión Digital, a leading Spanish-language religious news portal.

A bridge between north and south
Born in Chicago, Pope Leo spent years as a missionary and later as bishop in Chiclayo, Peru. Prior to that, he served as the superior general of the Order of Saint Augustine, residing just steps from St. Peter’s Square. His pastoral and ecclesial experience spans both North and South America - an embodiment, Cuda says, of his role as pontifex, or bridge-builder.

“This pope is a builder of bridges - not only between continents but between ecclesial visions,” Cuda observed. “He brings the strength of Latin American pastoral sensibility and the clarity of North American pragmatism.”

Chosen by Francis
Cuda, who worked closely with the late Pope Francis and with then-Cardinal Prevost at the Vatican, makes no secret of the new pope’s close alignment with his predecessor.

“He was Francis’ chosen one,” she stated plainly. “They met every Saturday at (Casa) Santa Marta. And Francis placed his trust in him - appointing him prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, one of the most influential positions in the Roman Curia, and later elevating him to cardinal bishop.”

Cuda emphasised that the appointment was not just a mark of favour, but a sign of continuity in Francis’ reform agenda. “Francis didn’t build a finished product - he began a process,” she said. “And Cardinal Prevost has both the temperament and the decisiveness to carry it forward.”

The charisma to mobilise
While some might describe the new pope as reserved or understated, Cuda rejects the notion that charisma must be theatrical.

“Charisma isn’t about grand gestures - it’s about the ability to mobilise hearts and minds without coercion,” she explained. “Prevost is a man of few words, but his actions speak powerfully. He’s someone who moves others - not with showmanship, but with conviction.”

Cuda added that Cardinal Prevost’s leadership style reflects the Bergoglian principle that “time is greater than space” - a reminder that the Church’s mission unfolds in historical processes rather than quick wins.

“This isn’t about dominating a space,” she said, “but nurturing a long-term path that may span generations. Cardinal Prevost understands that deeply.”

Courage and humanity
In speaking about his personal qualities, Cuda described the new pontiff as both courageous and deeply human.

“He is not afraid to make hard decisions, and he takes full responsibility for them,” she said. “At the same time, he is warm and approachable. He has a sense of humour, and when he hears something ironic or funny, he laughs openly. That kind of humanity is rare.”

Reflecting on her early impressions of him, Cuda admitted she never imagined him as a future pope - but was quickly won over by his authenticity and pastoral spirit.

A papacy for a changing world
In assessing recent papacies, Cuda places each Pope within the context of the Church’s historical challenges: Pope St. Paul VI engaging with emerging socialism, Pope St. John Paul II confronting communism, Pope Francis navigating populism in Latin America.

“Today, we face a new geopolitical reality, one marked by what I call neo-feudalism - a fragmented world order with shifting power centres,” she said. “To navigate this, we need a pope who can understand and engage with the logic of the United States, and that’s exactly what Cardinal Prevost can do.”

She concluded, “He is the right person for this moment in history - not to replicate Francis, but to carry forward his process with discernment and the flexibility to meet changing times.”

Pope Leo XIV is ‘truly close to everyone’, will follow in Pope Francis’ footsteps

“We are very happy. I hope it’s a gift (for us Augustinians), really, because it’s a gift for the Church. That is the important thing,” Father Alejandro Moral, prior general of the Augustinians, said upon the election of Robert Cardinal Prevost to the pontificate as Pope Leo XIV, on May 8, Vatican News reported.

The long-time friend of the newly elected Pope Leo, noted he “immediately spoke of justice and peace and of bridges between all, of synodality.”

“As Augustinians, we’re happy; we want him to be a servant,” Father Alejandro Moral said, hailing die new pope’s character, saying that he is “very balanced, very spiritual, a person truly close to everyone.”

Leo XIV “loves everyone, rich and poor alike. We (Augustinians) are very happy, because we think he will really serve the Church. We’ve been discussing this recently, and we think this will be the case,” Father Moral said.

Noting the choice of papal name - Pope Leo - Father Moral observed that it stems from the comideration that Pope Leo XIII “was a great pope.”

The Augustinian prior general emphasised the importance of the key words ‘justice, and ‘peace’ in Pope Leo’s first address from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican News reported.

“He spoke immediately of justice and peace and of bridges between all, of synodality. And then the words of St. Augustine, ‘We are pilgrims towards a true homeland,’ which give a clue to (his programme for the coming years’,” Father Moral said.

The new pope’s brother, John Prevost told CNN affiliate WBBM that he tinks Pope Leo XIV, “will be a second Pope Francis.”

Prevost said, “I think he’ll follow right in his footsteps working for the underprivileged.”

He said his brother will make a good pope because Pope Leo has “a deep feeling for the disenfranchised, for the poor, for those who were not listened to.”

Prevost said, “I think the very fact that in his heart, in his very soul, he wanted to be a missionary. He didn’t want the bishop. He didn’t want the cardinal, but that’s what he’s asked to do so that’s what he did.”

He said that he thinks his brother will be very active around the world and will “speak his mind.”

Vatican offers to host Ukraine-Russia talks after ‘tragic’ Istanbul meeting

Pietro Cardinal Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state offered to “eventually make the Vatican… available for a direct meeting” between - Ukraine and Russia, as the May - 16 talks between the two nations in Istanbul, Turkey, ended after just two hours, with little result except for a mutual prisoner exchange.

Cardinal Parolin was quoted by La Stampa as saying that “the outcome of the Istanbul summit is tragic,” He said the Vatican “hoped that a process could be started, perhaps slowly but with a peaceful solution to the conflict, and instead we are back to the beginning.”

The Istanbul meeting, hosted by the government of Turkey with the US urging the two sides to participate, was aimed at securing a 30-day unconditional ceasefire in the three year full-scale war - something Ukraine has repeatedly called for, although Russia has insisted on demands that British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, called “unacceptable.”

Cardinal Parolin had spoken with media ahead of the talks, while he was attending a May 14-15 conference on Ukraine hosted by the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

“We always hope there are openings for peace,” he said. “We are pleased that there is finally the possibility of a direct meeting. We hope that the existing issues can be resolved there and that a genuine peace process can begin.” The cardinal had also expressed hope that the Istanbul meeting might have marked “a serious starting point” to end the war.

Ukraine president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, had sought a face-to-face meeting with Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, at the gathering. After Putin dispatched a low-level delegation to Istanbul, Zelenskyy instead sent a team led by his defense minister.

According to La Stampa, Cardinal Parolin spoke about the Vatican’s post-Istanbul offer on the sidelines of an event about the summit. It quoted the cardinal as saying on May 16, “Now we will see what to do but the situation is very difficult, dramatic.”

The cardinal added that Pope Leo XIV intends “to eventually make the Vatican, the Holy See, available for a direct meeting between the two parties.”

According to the Associated Press, US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, confirmed that the Vatican could be a meeting venue for Russia-Ukraine peace talks before meeting on May 17 with Matteo Cardinal Zuppi of Bologna, Italy, who has served as a papal peace envoy between Ukraine and Russia since 2023.

“I think it’s a place that both sides would be comfortable going,” Rubio told reporters at the US Embassy in Rome.

On May 19, US president, Donald Trump and Putin had a two hour call after which the former posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he believed the call “went very well.”

Trump said, “Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War.” He said, “Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin immediately.”

Trump said he had informed Zelenskyy; as well as European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen; Emmanuel Macron, president of France; Giorgia Meloni prime minister of Italy; Friedrich Merz of chancellor Germany and Alexander Stubb, president of Finland.

Russia’s war on Ukraine continues attacks initiated in 2014, and has been declared a genocide in two joint reports from the New Lines Institute and the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights. The International Criminal Court has so far issued six arrest warrants for Russian officials, including Putin, for war crimes.

Pope Leo XIV will be an ‘original, not a clone’

Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and Jose Cardinal Advincula held a joint press conference after concelebrating the first Mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Sistine Chapel on May 9, CBCP News reported.

Giving his own preview of the direction of the new papacy, Cardinal David of Kalookan and head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, noted that Pope Leo’s first statements nearly paralleled the discussions of 12 days of general congregations held ahead of the conclave that eventually produced the first American pope.

Pope Leo XIV “treasures the memory of Pope Francis,” who made him cardinal in 2023 and prefect of the Vatican Dicastery in-charge of screening the world’s bishops, CBCP News reported.

“I can safely say majority of the cardinals would like to see a continuity of the spirit of the papacy of Pope Francis,” Cardinal David told reporters.

“Without being a clone, without being a photocopy. Every pope is going to be original,” he said.

Cardinal Tagle, pro-prefect at the Dicastery for Evangelisation, in-charge of more than a thousand mission territories, said, ‘There’s no turning back” on the Church’s outreach for the poor and marginalised.

“Pope Leo was a missionary and then a bishop in Peru. So he himself has been exposed to situations of poverty, of climate change, of the situations of indigenous peoples... of the refugee situation,” the cardinal said.

Cardinal Tagle characterised the new pope a “calm, determined,” and as one who doesn’t make a lot of noise.

“He is a very level-headed person. That is not the kind of person who will react impulsively. He will listen. And if necessary, he will study the issue... But when it comes down to it, it’s clear. And it helps in discernment.”

Cardinal Advincula, the archbishop of Manila, recalled his experience being at the same table as the then-Cardinal Prevost during the 2023 session of the 16th Ordinary Synod of Bishops (the Synod on Synodality), which sought paths for a more inclusive and listening Church.

The cardinal pointed to the new pope’s background as a canon lawyer. Pope Leo XIV has a doctorate from Rome’s Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, known as the Angelicum.

“He is really self-effacing, very humble, happy in confidence, calm, and then really very clear I with his explanation or exposition about certain matters, especially on canon law,” Cardinal Advincula said.

Meeting Eastern Catholics, pope pledges to be peacemaker

During a meeting with Eastern Catholics on May 14many of whom come from war-torn regions of the world, Pope Leo XIV pledged the Vatican’s full commitment to promoting peace and reconciliation.

“The peoples of our world desire peace, and to their leaders I appeal with all my heart: Let us meet, let us talk, let us negotiate!” the pope said during an audience in the Paul VI Hall with thousands of Eastern Catholics participating in their Jubilee pilgrimage to Rome.

“War is never inevitable,” the pope told them. “Weapons can and must be silenced, for they do not resolve problems but only increase them.”

The audience was the culmination of a multi-day Jubilee celebration that included liturgies in the diverse rites of the Eastern Catholic Churches - from the Syro-Malabar and Armenian traditions to the Byzantine and Coptic rites - held in Rome’s major basilicas.

Before the pope’s arrival, a vibrant atmosphere filled the hall as pilgrims waved flags from Ukraine, India, Iran, Lebanon and other nations; many were dressed in traditional attire - vividly expressing the Eastern churches’ global presence and the deep pride in the faith despite centuries of hardship and persecution.

“Who, better than you, can sing a song of hope even amid the abyss of violence?” Pope Leo asked them, citing the lived experience of communities from the Holy Land to Ukraine, from Syria and Lebanon to Tigray and the Caucasus.

On the stage alongside the pope were leaders of the Eastern Catholic Churches, including Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kyiv-Halych, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church; Louis Cardinal Sako, the Iraq-based patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church; Indian Baselios Cleemis Cardinal Thottunkal, major archbishop of Trivandrum and head of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church; as well as Claudio Cardinal Gugerotti, prefect of the Dicastery for Eastern Churches.

Pope Leo offered strong support for peace building efforts across the globe and reiterated the Vatican’s role as a neutral ground for diplomacy.

“The Holy See is always ready to help bring enemies together, face to face, to talk to one another, so that peoples everywhere may once more find hope and, recover the dignity they deserve - the dignity of peace,” he said.

The pope also thanked Eastern Catholics for their perseverance and witness, referring to their Churches as “martyr Churches,” and affirming their importance to the universal Church.

“You are precious in God’s eyes,” he said. “Truly, you have a unique and privileged role as the original setting where the Church was born.”

The pope warned that war and migration have placed many Eastern Catholics at risk of losing not only their homes, but their identity, calling on the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches to work with Latin-rite bishops to support the faithful in the diaspora.

“There is a need to promote greater awareness among Latin Christians” of the Eastern Catholic communities, he said, asking bishops to help Eastern Catholics preserve their traditions and “enrich the communities in which they live.”

He also asked Eastern Catholic leaders to remain rooted in gospel values and resist worldly temptations.

“Continue to be outstanding for your faith, hope and charity, and nothing else,” he urged them.

The pope said the universal Church needs the traditions, liturgies and spiritualties of the Eastern Christians.

“We have great need to recover the sense of mystery that remains alive in your liturgies, liturgies that engage the human person in his or her entirety, that sing of the beauty of salvation and evoke a sense of wonder at how God’s majesty embraces our human frailty!” he said.

Pope pledges strengthened dialogue with Jews

“Trusting in the assistance of the Almighty, I pledge to continue and strengthen the Church’s dialogue and cooperation with the Jewish people in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council’s declaration, Nostra Aetate (Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions),” Pope Leo XIV wrote in a message to Rabbi Noam Marans, director of interreligious affairs at the American Jewish Committee (AJC).

The pope’s message was signed on May 8 - the day of his election - was posted on the AJC’s X (formerly Twitter) account on May 13.

Promulgated 60 years ago, Nostra Aetate affirmed the Catholic Church’s spiritual kinship with the Jewish people and condemned all forms of anti-Semitism.

The AJC is an advocacy group that “stands up for Israel’s right to exist in peace and security; confronts antisemitism, no matter the source; and upholds the democratic values that unite Jews and our allies,” according to its website.

Although Pope Leo did not address the Israel-Hamas war explicitly after praying the Regina Goeli with pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on May 11, he called for an “immediate cease- fire” in the Gaza Strip.

“Let humanitarian aid be provided to the stricken civil population, and let all the hostages be freed,” he said.

Pope Leo also sent a personal message to Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni, the chief rabbi of Rome, “informing him of his election as the new pontiff,” according to a statement posted on May 13 on the Facebook page of Rome’s Jewish community.

The statement said, “The chief rabbi of Rome, who will be present at the celebration of the inauguration of the pontificate (May 18), welcomed with satisfaction and gratitude the words addressed to him by the new pope,”

Jews have lived in Rome since long before Christ was born, and centuries of interaction between the city’s Jewish community and the popes means Jewish-Vatican relations in the city have a unique history, much of it sad.

In 2010, when Pope Benedict XVI visited the Rome synagogue, the staff of the Jewish Museum of Rome, located in the synagogue complex, planned a special exhibit illustrating part of that history.

The centerpiece of the exhibit was comprised of 14 decorative panels made by Jewish artists to mark the inauguration of the pontificates of Pope Clement XII, Pope Clement XIII, Pope Clement XIV and Pope Pius Pope VI in the 1700s.

For hundreds of years, the Jewish community was obliged to participate in the ceremonies surrounding the enthronement of new popes - often in a humiliating manner.

Various groups in the city were assigned to decorate different sections of the pope’s route between the Vatican and the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the pope’s cathedral. The Jewish community was responsible for the stretch of road between the Colosseum and the Arch of Titus, which celebrates the Roman Empire’s victory over the Jews of Jerusalem in the first century. The Roman victory included the destruction of the Temple, Judaism’s holiest site, and the triumphal arch depicts Roman soldiers carrying off the menorah and other Jewish liturgical items.

Editorial
His name is Leo: a pontificate born of legacy and purpose

The white smoke that rose over the Sistine Chapel on May 8 marked more than just the end of a swift conclave - it marked the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the Catholic Church. With the election of Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome, taking the name “Leo XIV”, the Church now finds itself at the threshold of what promises to be a courageous and thoughtful pontificate.

In papal history, names are never incidental. They are not branding exercises or mere homages, but prophetic choices - signposts pointing to the mission a pope senses he is called to undertake. In choosing “Leo”, Prevost stands in the shadow of two towering figures: Leo the Great, who faced down Attila the Hun with nothing but moral authority and spiritual conviction, and Leo XIII, the architect of Catholic social teaching and the prophetic voice of the Church in the industrial age.

But Leo XIV is not merely looking back. His name, rich in legacy, signals a commitment to renew the Church’s relevance for today’s fractured world. In an era where threats come not on horseback but in the form of algorithmic manipulation, ecological neglect, digital alienation, and unchecked materialism, this new pope appears ready to revive the moral clarity and cultural depth that have historically distinguished the Catholic voice.

Leo XIV is also an Augustinian, formed by the interior depth and restlessness of St. Augustine. In this, he joins the lineage of popes who have been shaped by a spiritual search rooted in human longing, intellectual integrity, and a deep yearning for truth. His order’s founder exemplified a Christianity that does not shy away from the world’s questions but meets them with a heart forged in prayer and humility.

Yet perhaps the most tender - and telling - dimension of his name may lie closer to his predecessor. Pope Francis, who elevated Prevost to key roles in his reform of the Roman Curia, chose his own name in honour of the saint of the poor, Francis of Assisi. Among that saint’s closest companions was Brother Leo, a humble friar called the “little sheep of God.” Might Leo XIV be gently signalling that he, too, hopes to carry forward the spirit of simplicity, tenderness, and faithful service that so marked his mentor?

If so, this new pope may well blend the firmness of Leo the Great, the social conscience of Leo XIII, and the gentleness of Brother Leo. A synthesis rather than a rupture, his election appears to offer a bridge between past and future - between memory and mission. In a world hungering for authenticity, Pope Leo XIV may indeed become a voice of conscience: firm yet humble, rooted yet forward-looking, intellectual yet pastoral.

His name is Leo. And in that name lies not only a vision - but a promise: a promise of courage and a challenge of responsibility. The name reminds us that the past is not a burden, but a foundation. And that from the foundation, a future is born. jose, CMF
